I think it's partly because a lot of singers these days are trying to sing outside of their vocal ranges. Or at least vocal ranges that are within a pleasing range.

Josh Rouse needs to do a show near Raleigh, NC. My fiance and I LOVE his music! I play his songs on guitar and he's where it's at musically!

Josh Rouse is great I saw him years ago at an acoustic set at ironhorse in northampton been a fan since, I put him up there with Elliott Smith and Ryan Adams, honest and visionary artists

I love how Josh Rouse is real. His voice is the same live as it is on his albums. That's rare in recording artists nowadays.
