On August 26, 2009, 92-year old Matt Mattson travels from his home in Brooklyn to the Spanish Consulate in Manhattan in order to claim his Spanish citizenship. Mattson served in the Spanish Civil War as a volunteer in the International Brigades (1936-39); Spain's recent "Law of Historical Memory" makes IB veterans eligible for Spanish citizenship, without having to renounce the citizenship of their country of origin.
