Another great drum tune from a Sting album, this one in odd time, by the magnificent Vinnie Colaiuta. This track is in 7.... 7/4, 7/8, doesn't matter how you think of it. That's really just an academic question about how you'd WRITE the music. How you COUNT it is by counting the fast 7, so that the snare is always on 3 and 7, and the ride cymbal bell accent is on every other note. (1,3,5,7 of the first measure, then 2,4,6 of the 2nd measure.) In other words, the pattern resolves every 2nd measure of fast 7.

Vinnie has lots of nice little subtleties going on in the background, as usual.

  • what snare are you using man?? I really like it,,,!!!! please let me know,, ^^

  • @99laurence, thanks. It's a Pearl Dennis Chambers model snare drum. The snare-side head is cranked very tight, and the batter side is medium to medium tight. And I put 2 moongels on when I record.

By the way, this was recorded with a ZoomQ3, so what you're hearing is surprisingly close to the actual live sound in the room, just as your ear would hear it.
