Major upset, the only time Phillips defeated Edwin Moses, the two-time gold medalist. Moses actually ran a faster time for bronze than either of his gold medals in 1976 and 1984.

This is the full coverage, including post race replays and interviews. The race itself begins slightly past the 3:45 mark.

Note: 4th place finisher Kevin Young of the USA won the gold four years later in Barcelona, shattering Moses' world record at 46.78, a record that still stands, in fact the only sub-47 in history.

GOLD - Andre Phillips (USA), 47.19
SILVER - Amadou Dia Bia (SEN), 47.23
BRONZE - Edwin Moses (USA), 47.56

  • Moses could actually be said showed class by walking away and not trying to steal the spotlight from Phillips..NBC of course goes with the celebrity first...

  • @jimmyg141 He lost once prior to the 88 games, Danny Harris beat him the year before. After the 84 games, Moses was ducking several of the top contenders to keep his streak alive, especially Harald Schmidt.

  • A fact is not highlighted enough that is the second place of Amadou Dia Ba, the first african to occupy this rank. Forza Senegal

  • You're right. My bad.

  • @jimbriggs23

I said "runner" - a discus thrower is not a runner.

  • Also, Carl Lewis in the long jump -- 1984 - 1996. Might have had a fifth if we hadn't boycotted the 1980 Olympics, although he wasn't one of the top 4 or 5 in the world at the time.

  • @trickygoose2 You're wrong. Al Oerter won four consecutive gold medals in the discus - 1956, '60, '64, and '68.

  • Im not a fan of the interviewer. He seems like he enjoys telling Edwin that he got beat. I recall after the 100 meters he asked Calvin Smith if he was looking at Ben Johnson during the race, like Smith would really be checking out Ben's race. He's a aggrogant a-hole

  • ...Or should I say second gold!!

  • I like the way the interviewer tells off the Korean officials!! Ed Moses was denied the third gold by pointless boycott. He would have won 1980 by a massive margin...
