For my final presentation/essay on how empathetic robots in film alter the idea of singularity. For 21L.706 Film Studies. No copyright infringement intended; all rights go to the creators.

Singularity is the idea that machines could have the capacity to evolve at a faster pace than humans and is linked to the fear of robots gaining too much control. Blade Runner, AI, Bicentennial Man and I Robot present how this fear is complicated when Robots are presented as empathetic, humanistic creatures.

  • @cdmcowcam And it is these wars that help keep the population down. Imagine what's going to happen when and if we cure the major diseases and world peace occurs. I hope you enjoy sharing resources with 10 billion people

  • @sabonater9 Humans start wars and murder themselves in the millions.

The robots have a much smaller body count.

Therefore, the robots' are the better choice. Logical.

  • @alexpeters What do you mean, "What?"

  • @paxpaul what?

  • Heard Obama's address last night and immediately thought of this. GO DEMOCRATS! GO BIG BROTHER! GO PROGRESSIVE/NANNY/POLICE STATE!

  • @sabonater9 You don't know your Three Laws very well. :) In later books, the robot Daneel explained the Zeroth Law: "A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm." This was first used in the story they're pulling from in this movie: Susan Calvin faces robots that realize logic demands that such a law is inherent in the other Three. So, VIKI is right according to the laws as explained by their creator, Isaac Asimov, through his characters.

  • @Liquefaction i know i am LOL

  • @westtell4

    But it just seems so...heartless.

  • VIKI is wrong. One of the 3 laws explicitly says that robots may not harm humans. Her logic is in direct violation of the 3 laws
