Can the voices of children promote peace? How the children of Alameda help to promote peace in our own lives and in the world around us?
These are the profound questions that the students of The Child Unique Montessori School discussed as they approached World Peace Day, also known as the International Day of Peace, on September 21st. This annual holiday, first celebrated in 1981 and observed in many nations globally is dedicated to peace and the absence of war. While the inaugural "Peace Bell" was being rung at UN Headquarters, the students of The Child Unique Montessori School sang "Light a Candle for Peace" on the steps of the City Hall in Alameda. They sang along with 80,000 Montessori children around the world. The children also tackled a special project. They partnered with a small group of people around the Bay Area, who created origami cranes. In the spirit of peace, the children are sending 1000 origami cranes to some place in the world where peace is in great need. Perhaps 1000 cranes is only a beginning.
