These children are expert brick makers; they work alongside their parents and siblings, some as young as 8 years old. If a family of four works long and hard, they may make 1,000 bricks a day and earn $5.56 - enough to feed themselves for day. Child labor is forbidden in India but since their parents are so poor, the entire family must work in order to avoid starvation. These children deserve a better childhood and brighter future! The Salesians are in the process of building a new center to help these children and their families obtain better housing, food and education. Very small children can come and play and have a nutritious snack; working children can come for two hours of learning, recreation and rest.
It is a sad truth of life, and not rare in india. this is an every day site, especially in bigger areas and cities. i have been to india many times, i have spoken with these children, we must change our world. these children could grow to be so many wonderful tings. unfortunately, it is a cast system meaning they do what their parents did and do not have a chance to follow their own career choice. it is now changing, and is progressing away from this but there is still far to go.
