Voices of Washington performs Sam Cooke's song "A Change Is Gonna Come" .
Concert: Delta Towers Senior Apartments, August 22, 2010

Sam Cooke wrote this song in 1963, and by the time it was released in 1964 he was dead. At the time, it was still almost unheard of that any mainstream R&B singer would write a song that is so blatantly about the hopes of the Civil Rights movement. In the two years between its writing and release, Kennedy and Medgar Evers were assassinated, the bomb went off at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Martin Luther King gave the I Have A Dream speech and wrote the Letter from a Birmingham Jail, and the Civil Rights Act was passed. Even if there was still a long long way to go, it's incontrovertible that a change did come.

At this concert, we saved this song for last. Our audience of senior citizens ate it up. You can hear someone clapping gospel-music-style in the middle of the song, and at the end you hear someone yell "do it again!" What can we say, we like to give the people what they want!
