Here is a sad in universe fact, THIS doctor was the only one of the doctor's incarnations to die of old age. Every last one afterward died before they were supposed to.
The Doctor has given up literally centuries of his life to protect one little blue dot of a planet.

@jemmytaveras The intention (which didn't come across very well) was that Mondas's sucking of energy from Earth took lots of energy from The Doctor as well, causing his body to completely wear out.
It probably had something to do with his life being out drained out of him in The Savages, as well as being exposed to the Time Destructor in the Daleks' Master Plan.

Mr. Hartnell was THE man. After all...you gotta start somewhere, and without a First Doctor, we wouldn't have the rest. RIP good sir, hope you're proud of the show you helped get going.
