The gift that had no value to me, restores some or all of its value in the hands of my friend. That is an increase in total wealth and according to studies that increase is upwards of 40%. Look for yourself on npr's planet money from december 23rd.

Trading and or re gifting is one of the best solutions to these problems and here is why....

Lets say that i receive a gift that has absolutely no value to me because its something i don't need or even want. That gift now has a value of zero, regardless of what the giver paid for it. In this scenario lets say my friend really needed wanted or needed this gift that i received so I "re-gifted" and gave it to him/her.

Re-gifting is a deterrent to the huge economic problem gift giving causes. To put it simply when you go and buy something you buy it because that item was at least worth the amount of money you paid for it. Well, at Christmas, a time when the most gifts are given, studies show that 50% of all given gifts are completely unwanted totaling almost 13 billion dollars in losses. That number is quite shocking and it inspired economists to conduct experiments for potential solutions.
