I took this video footage of my MM-1000 after I took it out to rebuild the power supply. Listen to those relays. Watch those reels spin round. Ahhh, you can almost smell that distinct odor of a warm Ampex! Enjoy.

I have several Studer machine(A80, J37, C37, B62 etc)
I beleive MM1000 was the first 16 tracker?

I think that this is the 'monstral machine, as big as that fireplace' which Frank Zappa in the BBC Late Show interview in 1993, describes as using to record Hot Rats on in 16 track in 1969. Sadly analogue is dead, just too cumbersome and expensive. All the pros who have to record things every day no longer have piles of 2" stock around the place, so much more convenient to record digital. Don't get me wrong I love analogue but the stock alone costs a fortune.

it truly was electro-mechanical porn of the highest degree, I wish you could have had a shot of the pinch roller arm solenoid engaging, that would have been sooo neat...

What a beast. We had an MM1000 in our studio when I was in the music recording program at college. Nice Neve 8014 console too. Wonder what they ever did with that gear?

Wow, you have some great machines! Yes, the MM-1000 was indeed the first 16 track recorder. Ampex released these in 1968, and the model you see here is from 1970.

Pinch roller shot at 4:48-4:53!
And yes, this is all music I recorded on this machine...Double Nines (member of Dropkick Murphy's), Transient (member of Shadows Fall), and Bloodhorse, in that order.
