I think is an error and bad programming of your own mind to keep confessing to others that one is a gambler or alcoholic. I know the logic behind it is that people must undo denial but it would be much better to state something to the effect of 'I have a serious alcohol problem and my personality has become organized around this problem.'
It's not like anybody 'IS' an alcoholic or gambler. It's just a learned behaviour that for a variety of psychological reasons takes root in the personality...
