I always have to laugh when guitarists say that The Edge isn't a good guitarist. He isn't a shredder, no - but what we are seeing in this video is absolute _mastery_ of guitar, end of story, full stop. Such great playing from everyone in this one.

Pop indeed intends to pay tribute to club culture and music, the first three tracks were essencially about it - it's not mocking nor ironic, it's serious.

It's a heavy record which deals with contemporary issues with brightness, loveless sex (Do You Feel Loved), fame and self (Gone, MOFO), mídia and spirituality (Staring At The Sun, Last Night on Earth - see the video), consumism and religion (If God Will Send His Angels, The Playboy Mansion) with dark imagery overall. It's a status-quo picture

I completely agree, I was 15 when pop came out and I loved it, especially staring at the sun. I remember it being so relevant to the troubles in Northern Ireland and all the trouble in the balkands, I tried to play the guitar like the edge but i stuck to the simple chords of Oasis instead

By the way, this is U2 almost 20 years into their existence. Show me another rock band who puts out this kind of quality and creativity after 20 years.

This is not Rotterdam, it was the MTV Video Music Awards in New York on 4 September 1997. U2 was in the middle of the PopMart Tour, and took a break to perform this haunting monster masterpiece of a song to a crowd who didn't know what hit them. Only U2 can make you feel like you are at their own concert for a moment in time, and not just watching some group play a hit as part of the awards show. By the 3:40 mark U2 was filling the arena with the trademark U2 sound that could not be denied.
