New York 5 Boro Bike Tour 5-2-10
Five Boro Bike Tour
We began our adventure at 5:00 AM on Saturday morning May 2nd;Charles, Vincenteen, Cheryl,
Roxanne, Jimmy Hurtt, and our very first newbie Robert Miller, in Newark, New Jersey where we all stayed overnight. This was the first time doing this tour for all except Vincenteen and Charles. The skies were dark and overcast, the air cool as we began our journey. The forecast predicted rain. After a somewhat delayed start due to some folks oversleeping and another getting locked out of his room (we wont mention any names J) we were off to the Staten Island Ferry. Thanks to very good investigative work by Charles the day before we found our way around with no problems. Once on the Ferry our excitement soared. There was nothing but bikers everywhere. The ride to Manhattan was slow, peaceful and scenic. Lady liberty could be seen through the morning fog and the New York skyline beckoned us. After a brief stop at Starbucks to fuel up we lined up behind thousands of other bikers. We were blocks from the start line. And there we waited..and waitedand waited.for the ride to start. As the clock ticked 30, then 40, then 50 minutes past the start time, the crowd grew more and more impatient and restless. The inching toward the front began and many cyclists began ringing their bike bells. Just when we thought we could not stand another minute the skies cleared, the sun broke through and the ride began. Through Manhattan, Central Park, Harlem, and Queens we went. We spent as much time standing in line as we did riding. At least five bridges were crossed. The rest stops were jam packed, but well supplied with snacks, fruit and drinks. As hard as we tried to stay together, we invariably lost each other at times amid the 30,000 other bikers. No problem, we regrouped at each rest stop. All finished the ride with no mishaps. Only one needed the Sag due to a very bad case of cramps. All in all a very pleasant day. I highly recommend this ride for next year. Good ride for newbies.
