Two dances from the traditional French Canadian gigue (step dance) repertoire of Les Sortileges (The Canadian National Folkdance Ensemble). The first is the very difficult and impressive "Brandy Frotte" and the second is "Reel De La St-Jean", which is a three section work demonstrating different styles of step dancing that influence the unique French Canadian gigue style. Videotaped in 1986 in Morelia Mexico.

  • Is Brandy Frotte the name of the dance as opposed to the tune (which is la Grande Gigue Simple)?

  • That's correct.

  • 3:13 is a hornpipe. The Boys of Bluehill, I believe. We do this in Irish dance class every week - not the steps, the music.
