It’s really not. Pop music in the 1960s was heavily censored. Political songs were usually banned from the radio. To get around this, the more intellectual musicians of the era (Jagger, Dylan, Lennon) used to make their lyrics very metaphorical, weird, and strange, so they could write on contentious, political subjects.
“I am the Walrus” refers to the Lewis Carroll poem, “The Walrus and the Carpenter”, which itself is about the evils of capitalism, consumerism and greed.
