Baseball players became real people to me as a kid on August 2nd, 1979. They ceased being larger than life 'superheroes' when my hero Thurman Munson died. All I remember thinking was 'how could he die?'

i have always said that the greatest moment in carlton fisk's career is the day that thurman munson died.

@joediver1119....the Yankees did not win the AL pennant in 1980, they won the division, but lost to the Royals in the ALCS. As for your argument that they won the pennant in 1981 without him, you might as well say they won the World Series in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 without him. That is a stupid point you tried to make, and as for celebrating the way he died, one can only hope you go the same way, and very soon.

@fawkyou3 Did they win the World Series those years without him, clown? The last I checked - no. They DID in '77 & '78 WITH him and unlike whatever hillbilly town you're crawling around in, that's ALL that matters here in NY. You wanna see REAL baseball and baseball fans? Then move the fuck outta East Jabib.

@fawkyou3 And yet another lyrical masterpeice of the the written word from , no doubt, a member of 'Red Sox Nation'. About par for the course I guess. At least you admitted that in no way were his baseball statistics and talent unworthy. By the way, any don't you go ask Fisk what his opinion is

@EvanGrayForger And let me just throw this at ya. American League Rookie of The Year. American League Most Valuable Player. Played the hardest position in SPORTS (Goalies not included) to near perfection. Was THE premier clutch hitter of the AL during his career, played hurt almost EVERY day and oh yeah, - 2 time World champion. He's a Hall of Famer

@sportsontap Hey Evan, you're an idiot who obviously has never been to New York (at least not the AL part of town anyway) Munson WAS the Yankees and demeanor should have fucking NOTHING to do whatsoever with what was accomplished on the field. I dont like what Rose did but does he deserve to be in - Hell yeah. Eddie Murray? About as sullen and rotten a an SOB as they made 'em. Is he a Hall of Famer. NO question.
A man who passed away in a horrid accident. Just trying to learn how to fly, because he was homesick too often while being away from his family playing baseball every day.
What a player, what a hero, what a man...what a Yankee.

@SellTheFake
He was. He had a shoulder injury early in his career and a thumb dislocation or two on his throwing hand. Not making excuses - even he said he had a horrible motion.
