As a criminal lawyer whose specialty was representing kids, Sheila Joseph knew better than anyone just how bad the education system in low-income communities could be. Hearing about New York's Teaching Fellow's program, Sheila decided to take a couple of years off from law and try to make a difference in kids lives before they needed a lawyer. She went to work in East Jamaica, Queens at a school that was about to close. That year an inspiring principal turned it around, requiring students to go to school 12 months a year and raising their test scores as a result. But the next year, under a new principal, the school tumbled back to the lowest-performance in the borough. Through the Fellows Program, she learned about starting a charter school. It was a long and complicated process, but because of her perseverance and commitment, East New York Prep was created. On September 5, 2006, the school opened its doors for the first time to 110 kids who comprise the class of 2014. Their principal, Sheila Joseph, and the dedicated teachers she's recruited, intend to see each one live up to their full potential. Go to www.eastnyprep.org to learn more.

  • I am a 16 year old male... I have wanted to teach kids since I was 14 years of age. This video just shows me how I want to be a strong leader for the kids, just like this Lady has done. I want to be a second father for kids, so they can look up to me. I will not let you down. I want to be a teacher

  • Thank you for providing these young Americans

with a real chance at life. I am a teacher and

I really know what a big difference you are making. I hope the next administration will

pay teachers the salary they deserve.

  • @crossblades400 Hey me and you both, when I get to a higher grade and have free subjects im going to observe physical education teachers and take notes on them, and keep that book for the rest of my life so I can know what to do when I teach physical education

  • i CAN AND I WILL start a school enshallah

i want to be so proud like her when she said that she's the founder and the principal of the school

  • That was my principal for 4 years

    Miss her

  • @Nicole3900 Ohh piece of candy.

  • @TommyTonic10 You're rude. If you're a little kid you shouldn't be on Youtube. And if you're "super smart" you should have learned what kindness and respect were back in kindergarten. Apparently you missed that lesson.

  • @crossblades400 You're going to be a fantastic teacher. I'm 15 (female) and I've always wanted to be an elementary school teacher. Good luck -- you'll be great.

  • You will bw blessed for your hard work and dedication to children.
