DRAFT TRANSLATION OF THE EVENTS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - JAN 5 2012
- The tremor that shook the country at dawn this Thursday at 5:35 am, caused panic amongst the population, and had a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale.
- The epicentre of the movement was located in the Bay of Ocoa, at a latitude of 18.3º degrees, and longitude 70.5º.
- This location is 17 km south-southeast of Ocoa, and about 55 km to the West of Santo Domingo, the United States Seismological Service (USGS) reported.
- The tremor was focused around 10 km deep, which could have caused it to be felt through-out the entire country.
- Up to now, no damages have been reported, in spite of the fact that it was felt on a national level.
- On the Azua-San Juan highway, at the height of the tremor, there were a number of land-slides reported, which has led to the recommendation to drivers to be cautious.
- From the UASD
In a local report, the Seismological Institute of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), stated the earthquake was of a magnitude 5.2, with an epicentre in the latitude 18.3º and longitude of 70.5º degrees.
- Contrary to the American (USGS) service, the local (UASD) report told of a depth of 30 km. "It was located around the South between San Cristóbal, Baní, Ocoa and other nearby regions, and was felt in the entire country", he said.
- The UASD informed 'elCaribe' that several after-shocks have taken place since the 5.3 Richter Scale tremor the country felt this Thursday morning causing panic in the population.
- Eugenio Polanco, director of the organisation, said to 'elCaribe' (www.elcaribe.com.do) that the last tremor was a magnitude of 3.3, and happened at 8:25 in the morning, and that none of the subsequent movements were significant events.
- He said officially, that these events are possible in the Dominican Republic and for which, the population should always be prepared. "This is a seismic country, we don't know at what moment an important earthquake can occur, and that puts us in an emergency situation", Polanco recorded.
very strange pretty large for that area.

@MrHurricaneTracker - Hi,... yes I agree and more so because of the shallow depth -- even though there is a discrepancy between the USGS reports & the local UASD one.
I also think this will get worse due to the continued swarm in the area to the East along this horizontal fault line.
