Here I thought I was being hisorically a little outrageous by painting Sutter as kind of slimy and manipulative! The characters in my book don't like or trust him at all,(and think Bidwell was a bit of a boob) and now it looks like I was more accurate than I knew!

Interesting... I had written about the Micheltorena War in my novel about the Stephens-Townsend Party, as the men of that 1844 group were rather press-ganged into it, by Sutter!

John Marsh was definately "gang pressed" into this whole mess by Sutter. Marsh's rancho was looted. Weber, however, refused to go and was thrown into prison by Sutter. In revenge, Marsh and John Gantt spread dissaffection among the Americans. Gantt called Sutter along with Bidwell and their allies "bugs." Many years later Bidwell got his own revenge by trashing Marsh pretty badly in a so-called autobiograpy published long after Marsh's death.
