Toronto, Ontario - September 16, 2008 Today, Canada became the first country to approve Xarelto® (rivaroxaban), the first in a new class of anticoagulants, for the prevention of venous thromboembolic events (VTE), or blood clots, in patients who have undergone elective total hip or total knee replacement surgery. As a direct factor Xa inhibitor, Xarelto targets an enzyme that acts as a switch to control clotting, reducing the risk of potentially deadly blood clots that can form post hip or knee replacement surgery.
