http://weblog.greenpeace.org/nuclearreaction Greenpeace reports that high radiation levels have been found on the streets of Akokan in Niger due to its proximity to uranium mines owned by Areva.
Radon is dangerous, and it is a byproduct of uranium's decay process. Assuming they are not lying about their readings (which could be, as this video is designed to convince rather than inform), they are making a valid point.
I believe that nuclear power is an excellent way of moving this world to a sustainable energy future, but I also believe that the greed of companies is not to be underestimated (yes, call me a hippie, I dare you).
It is important that this issue is discussed properly.
This is NOT TRUE. Natural uranium is not radioactive. Its enriched uranium that is radioactive. So no radioactive material can come from a mine. If there's a uranium treatment plant nearby, I'd understand, but this report only tells us that "radioactive comes from the mine" and that is clearly untrue. Greenpeace (an organisation that I truly support for its work on animal rights) should inform itself better before making this kind of documentaries.
Uranium ore is essentially harmless due to its long half-life. Radon gas produced naturally from Uranium is significantly more dangerous, but in open areas is not a problem. Additionally, no figures of the sievert doses found in these areas were given - you can hold up a geiger counter to air and it will still click, I'd like some numbers.
@XFackTahSchoolNurseX you disgust me. Your arrogance is horrendous.
