Location: Riverside, CA, USA; behind my art studio on 3rd. St., near the 91 Freeway.

I wanted to check on the health of the two plants that I an artist Mary Ann Arntzen planted behind the art studio. The ground at the railroad tracks is packed crushed gravel down to aproximately 8 inches deep, so soil suitable for planting is nearly nonexistent. We planted two of my plants: A type of bamboo and mint. We dug deeply enough to reach the packed clay. We chose this location to determine whether the plants could sustain themselves.

Six months later, today, I revisited the location; It's only about 75 yards away but the route is circuitous and unfriendly so I, and we, rarely go there. On this occasion, however, I decided to check on the plants on my own.

I never got there because I became distracted by the four outside cats that simply went under the fence to meet me about half way there, so I sat on one of the RR track rails and began to pet them. One started to play with a long, dry twig. I picked it up and teased them with it. We had a good time.

I went to get my Nikon consumer camera, the same one that I use to make fine art photos, with the thought of making a movie of my teasing the cats on the railroad track.

I invited Joe -- an IT business owner in the next building over on the same Lynn Miller property -- to join me, but the cats remained hidden, with only their noses showing through the vegetation that forms a small grotto-type of enclosure in this otherwise dreary location for an art studio. He sat on the next RR track behind me but the cats still remained hidden, so he left, "I guess they will not come out...I got to meet with my boy anyway," and he left.

After convincing the cats that the human that was a stranger was no longer here, they finally came out, and I got them to play on the railroad tracks. I may make more of these.

  • Update on the feral outside cats:

A car ran over one. The other developed feline leukemia, lost the ability to eat, and wasted away, becoming nearly a skeleton before finding a resting place hidden away.

  • Wtf? are you trying to get cats hit by a train?

  • What a drop nut
