Arguably, the dad could be infected with one of those crazy insect parasites that forces them to migrate to the tops of stalk plants so that they spread the parasite by being eaten (because they're more easily seen by predators at the top) or spreading spores. It'd explain why he wants to go get them damn top-level tea leaves so badly.
