A lonely painter, disappointed with life, wanders around town amidst the shadows of the past. More of a craftsman than an artist, and a self-proclaimed poet, he sees kindred spirits in the literary masters who died at their own hand. For years, he had deluded himself that art would be his salvation, would help him escape the fate of his parents. Obsessed with unrequited love, he starts painting the last portrait of a dying prostitute. With every stroke of the brush, he discovers emotions he has never experienced before.
Beside fictitious characters, the story about unfulfilled feelings, the passing of life, art, and death, includes historical figures: Sándor Márai, Goethe, Kleist, Kafka, Novalis. "Incompleteness" is a praise of being faithful to ones ideals in literature and life.
