"Slide Away" scraped the top 100 in the UK singles chart. The song was taken from the band's first album, A Storm in Heaven. The song shot straight to the top of US Indie Rock charts throughout 1993, and due to the popularity of the song, The Verve were invited onto the successful 90's alternative rock festival, Lollapalooza, in the following year, 1994.

When I first heard this song in October 1994, I was 23. I was very much taken with its advanced acoustical ambiance...it took me to another world. At the time I was totally, romatically in love with a girl (who was 19) and I will always associated this song with my love for her...you have to understand, for its time it was quite ahead of its time...just my $0.06...
