Hmmm very interesting, you really made me want to read this, also though a little strange I believe this bookclub is a really great idea, sorta makes people want to read more. Good job. Btw, I wonder how many times we hear the word "death" in this review :P
Brilliant. I really needed to re-read the book thief, and now I can do it with you ^_^. I love the book, and I will always love my friend who made me read it.
@CrakenX Additionally, he takes care to pleasantly counterpoint Death's frank speaking style with his use of poignant and artistic description. Also, in the few pages that comprise the prologue, Zusak manages to construct a series of vividly striking tableaux. They boldly portray what's to come while leaving just enough unsaid to make you want more. It's truly very masterfully done.
I received The Book Thief as a present for my 18th birthday and I absolutely adored it. I'm looking forward to rereading it along with you in the coming weeks! But, yeah, to echo what other commenters have said, the book's prologue is honestly one of the most captivating beginnings to any story ever written as far I'm concerned. I enjoy how Zusak so adeptly manages to portray Death as a completely likeable and to some extent relateable being. When you think about, that's not such an easy task.
This is one of my favorite books! When I first read The Book Thief I was told it was narrated by death and that was it. I learned the plot and setting while I read it. Kinda the oposite of your experience.
Death in this book always reminded me of lemony snicket in the unfortunate events books, albeit less comedic
