Twice a year the International Reporting Project (IRP) awards up to 12 U.S. "gatekeeper" editors fellowships to travel as a group on an intensive fact-finding visit to a single important but somewhat under covered country in the news.

In May 2008 12 senior U.S. editors and producers traveled to Uganda for a 10-day International Reporting Project (IRP) Gatekeeper Editors trip. They were accompanied by Ben de la Cruz of Washingtonpost.com, who shot video during the trip.

Recent studies, in Uganda and elsewhere, show that male circumcision helps reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Joseph Kagaayi, medical officer at the Rakai Health Services Program in southwestern Uganda, explains the significance of these findings.

  • Circumcision does not prevent AIDS and HIV. The rest of the "package" is what helps. The money is better spent on the rest of the "package". These people need condoms and education.

  • Women is Swaziland are already feeling the serious repercussions from this very harmful and faulty message. HIV infections resulting from those who falsely believe and wish to believe that circumcision alone protects them.

The current issue of Mothering Magazine goes into great depth to expose the falseness of the circumcision/AIDS claims in an article entitled, CIRCUMCISION DOES NOT PREVENT AIDS.

  • @whatUneverknew you said it is the result of racism, who's racism? whitey, right?

  • Full of it, huh? How's that? Did you even watch the video? Do you REALLY believe that some 5 zillion year old (before HIV) religious cutting ritual can prevent HIV?

Do you really believe that these "researchers" have the African people's best interests in mind? (not do you care, or agree, but do you believe it)

It's funny, I wouldn't have expected you to say that.

  • @whatUneverknew "Discover the racism and cruelty behind circumcision promotion."

    you

    are

    so

    full

    of

    fucking

    shit.

  • These people are being lied to. Discover the racism and cruelty behind circumcision promotion. Watch my videos A Healthy Dose of Doubt 1 & 2

  • Why dont they bring condoms there??????? Why dont teach people how to use condoms?? Why dont tell people how to test themselves and their partners to HIV in blood?? They came to africa -said circ. prevents you from HIV and they left leaving people encouraged that now they can feel protected, my godness when this nonsense stop?????

  • Bullshit. More than 75 % of the Western European population is uncircumcised, why are the HIV infection rates so low over there ??? Also, most of the male population in North Africa is circumcised, why are AIDS-infection rates so high over there ??? Circumcision has very little co-relation to AIDS, the key issues are sanitation, hygiene standards, malnourishment and regulation of prostitution.

  • Circumcision does NOT prevent aids and will not cut down the infection rate. just look at the US and Israel.

  • Willing to bet that Dr. Jo's bank account is a bit improved since these studies began. Bribed with money funded through NIH and continuing to make a dime on all those free circumcisions; someone is paying for them after all. The whole situation is just sick....
