Benedict's incredible performance as Stephen Hawking.
Aired April 2004
Written by Peter Moffat - writer of the acclaimed series Cambridge Spies and North Square - Hawking stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the young Stephen Hawking who, as a bright and ambitious 21-year-old PhD student at Cambridge University, is diagnosed with the debilitating motor neurone disease and given two years to live.

Against the odds, he goes on to achieve scientific success and worldwide acclaim, in particular with his best-selling book A Brief History Of Time.

  • first the physical hardships of muscle control deterioration, then the speech difficulties...I love how Benedict makes it so believable!

  • at 2:00 i would have laughed so much if he went 'no, thats wrong' and rubbed it all out to start again.

  • @barbaro267 Yes, he is really highly gifted. This change of mimical expression, this limb, this lisple, this crippled hands, this crooked smile - amazing. He is absolutely in it. Total immersion, so to speak.

  • @girlwithaharp Well, they try to make as authentical as possible...Only by the way: Did you know that the piece sign originated from a crane's foot? I think the indians used it.

  • Just imagine the balls it took for that kid to stand up and blast that stuffy professor at the Royal Society! It staggers me to think of it. Ben Cumberbatch is one talented young man.

  • Imagine if he got to the end and realised he'd forgotten to carry the two ...

  • @barbaro267 I know what you mean. I saw the original airing of this, and have subsequently watched it many times. When I do, he IS Hawking. Both sad and beautiful, and both represented equally in a tear or two.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch AND Tom Ward! XD

  • 12:40

  • For some reason it always makes me smile to see that peace button on his jacket lapel. :)
