Philippines - City of Guilt (Part 2 0f 2)

This episode, aired in 2006, reports on the issues of contraception and abortion in the Philippines, the latter being illegal. Looks at how the huge numbers of dangerous backstreet abortions and how women in poverty unable to cope with large families are desperate for contraceptive and abortion access. Against this also looks at the concerted efforts and campaigns by the Catholic Church against both these, and how they are also backed by US right-wing Christian groups. The latter are influencing President Bush into stopping foreign aid to clinics which give contraceptive advice.

Dear Mayor Atienza, It is so easy for you to say that contraception is bad because you actually have a roof over your head, you probably eat more than three times a day and you are living comfortably. But how about people who cannot even afford to pay one meal a day? Have you actually been to the slums? If we do not control the population now, how is the government going to provide adequate needs for the rest of 780 million people and counting?

@megumiisan This is disturbing. I lived among Filipinos all my life but this is disturbing. I wish i could do something. I wish filipinos living abroad do something about this. I always thought filipinos were the most honest people in the world but corruption and the devil has not left them alone. I wish all the best for this country and hope they do well. I hope the people abroad (filipinos) who live and eat well, help these people.

@nightcrawlercarmela There are an awful lot of people like you who live in a 'cocoon!' Modesty and chastity ha ha ha - do you think the world is going to take notice? People are people and having sex is what they do and with contraception risks of pregnancy can be reduced. Look at he statistics of the countries where safe sex is practiced. As for side effects and complications you should remember everything in life carries a risk which includes living in your own home.

The ACT of praying or meditating is only beneficial to one's general well-being (as shown in scientific studies) like feeling calm, revitalized etc. However, it has no effect WHATSOEVER on anything else. I've yet to see prayer grow lost limbs. It's quite stupid for people to pray for such a large scale problem as this. If prayer can't grow limbs, it certainly won't put food on the table or make uneducated people suddenly educated.
