Obama Releases Bush-Era Memos Authorizing Torture Techniques, Rules Out Prosecuting CIA Interrogators who Carried Them Out

The Obama administration has released four memos from the Bush-era Justice Department that approved and provided the legal basis for the CIAs use of torture. While President Obama has said he will not pursue prosecutions of CIA employees, he did not explicitly address the question of prosecuting the former Justice Department lawyers who authored the memos. The memos release comes as a Spanish court is considering bringing indictments against six Bush-era lawyers. We get analysis from human rights attorney Scott Horton. [includes rush transcript]

  • As Americans, I'm not sure how surprised or offended we should be by these revelations. The memos being authored in August and the CIA behavior going back to the previous April really doesn't mean anything. A simple verbal say-so from the White House would be sufficient for a patriotic CIA torturer to do his work. As a country we've ceded so much power to the executive branch we really shouldn't be too upset to find a villain in the White House. Bush-Cheney will never be held to account .

  • what's the point of going back to a clinton mentality? That's what got 3000 american civilians murdered on 911.

  • Just read the first memo actually. It's no where near and seedy and conspiratorial as I was expecting.

The techniques done as described in the memo are somewhat cautious not to inflict anything really other than fear and sense of no control.

Problem is of course you can garantee that often it wasn't adhered to by the letter.

Interesting read though I recommend it (PDF File)

  • Can anyone be surprised? The only hope for justice is foreign courts...What a laugh!!

  • no hope, no change, no responsibility.
