A CYCLIST has been crushed to death by a bin lorry in a horrific rush-hour accident outside a primary school.

The victim -- believed to be a man in his 20s -- was riding a mountain bike when he collided with an Edinburgh council truck in the city's Broughton Road.

The accident, shortly before 8am today (Thu), happened just yards from Broughton primary school.

It is not thought any children witnessed the accident although youngsters were shepherded past the mangled remains of the bike and the victim's rucksack.

The accident happened at the junction of Broughton Road and East Claremont Road, which was immediately closed by investigators.

Lothian and Borders Police appealed for witnesses to come forward.

  • Tragic.Cyclists involved in cycle lane design can´t be far off surely.

  • Looks to me like a case of lorry turning left with an undertaking cyclist.... This is one of the reasons cycle lanes on the left hand side of the road allowing undertaking is such a stupid idea....
