  • Hello , I have been thinking about dressing better at my job I really enjoy wearing a suit or a dress shirt and tie however I work in a prison and only wardens and upper managment wear such clothing everyone I work with including my boss wears khakis and t- shirts sometimes polos and if course the inmates I work with wear state issued clothing . Would it be over dressing for me to start wearing a more classy wardrobe to my job ?

  • @TheChad2108 We get a lot of "can I out-dress my boss" e-mails. And in general the rule is yes, to a point - you can be dressy but not flashy. You don't want to look like you're putting on airs, so keep it conservative and classic. A prison may also have specific rules of its own, for example I know some would prohibit neckties or require clip-ons only for safety reasons.

  • Why debt people where bow ties anymore? I love them, when did they go out of style?

  • @1xraydoc They never left - you just have to have the courage to wear them and the know-how to do it right.

  • @AnomalyTea I think you're safe. "Outdressing" in the sense of going a level of formality higher -- neckties where your boss doesn't wear one, sports jackets in your case, etc. -- might be pushing it. But just doing the same basic level of formality (polos or dress shirts without neckties) is fine even if you're doing it BETTER than he is :D

  • @SirBlade666 This goes with a grain of salt. At my workplace (IT dept), baggy khakis and polo shirts are "acceptable" (and what my boss wears, and his boss as well), although technically not up to dress code. I wear slacks and dress shirts. I agree that you shouldn't outdress him too much (I don't wear ties, sportscoats, or suits), but a small degree of outdressing is acceptable. No need to look sloppy just because your boss does =P

  • @jstu45 You are welcome sir!

  • @SirBlade666 Unless you know you're about to take his job:)

  • @BestMensTies That they do!

  • Thanks for the explaination AC....Real Men Real Style has a great interactive website

  • No. 5: Dont outdress your boss, this can be quite bad for your carreer.
