I want to hear back from you about the problem of over-churched kids in your ministry. How do you balance the deeper teaching they need with the basic Gospel message for new kids?
I have the same problem, almost more so. The last thing I want is to raise PK's. They see so much here on the mission field, that they are unmoved by almost anything. They see church as work, a responsibility, and not a fun and enjoyable experience with God. I have been searching for an answer as how to rekindle the fire in them. They have heard it all, seen it all, and have deaf ears when we try to talk about God. HELP!!!
I have found a hunger in the church at large for application. In kid's classes, there is a temptation to teach a story instead of a truth. I try to tie each lesson and preferably multiple lessons to a core truth that they can live out. The more that application is driving the bus, the more kids can be excited about what they are learning in church because they understand what it means for their lives. Parents need to know and reinforce these key truths so that the kids see God's word lived.
I had much of the same problem with my son. I told him that every time I went to church, I learned something new and that God would direct his (Jason's) path so that he could find something new, too. Then, on the way home, after asking about the usual (Bible story, verse, etc.), I'd ask him what he learned that was new and I'd tell him what I learned that was new, too.
Good thread! Can't wait to see the responses! --Cindy Petty
