Miles was the king of Modal Jazz. While Coleman brought free jazz to the fore, Coltrane took it to the stratosphere. He is, without equvocation, the king of free jazz.

Transformation, Transition,Transcendence,Awake ning, Realization, it's his journey and we are free to go with him! I have been awstruck by his sound, energy and dedication for many years. He can play one single, sustained note and it speaks volumes. He still brings tears to my eys and awakens my heart. GOD BLESS YOU JOHN AND THIS INCREDIBLE QUARTET OF MAGICIANS!!!!

It's good of you for pointing that out, a lot of people seemed to get them mixed up. This is actually my favorite Coltrane period, it was still Modal, but he was pushing the absolute boundaries of the form. I find some of what he did with Alice Coltrane interesting, but for the most part it doesn't have the same structure like this.
