One Shot.
I'll Die With You

My arms were folded on Demi's bed, with my head resting on them. I was asleep. That is until I felt someone tugging on my shirt. My eyes open, but I don't lift my head up. I sigh quietly knowing it was Danika.
"Daddy.. daddy.."
When I finally get the courage to face her, I sit up in my seat giving her a crooked smile. She smiles at me and a better smile than mines too. Her voice was full of perkyness.
"Morning daddy!"
I pull her on my lap, "Hello, babygirl.."
She twists and turns on my lap as she faces her unconsious mother.
"Did mommy wake up again?"
I let out another silent sigh in my head. Oh, how I wish I could say 'yes'.
"Not yet, princess."
She leans her back into my chest as she grabbed my hand placing it in her tiny lap.
"Don't worry, daddy." She says as I notice the change in her perky voice. "She'll open her eyes. I can feel it, daddy. She will."
My hand rises as she holds it up to her cute little lips. She kisses my thumb and I kiss her hair, smiling down at her slightly. Demi's been in a coma for almost seven months now. If it wasn't for Danika, I would've lost it. She gave me hope. She was my the candle that flickered for me when all that's surrounding me was pure darkness. Demi showed signs of consiousness every now and then, but its always a disappointment because she never wakes up. Just two weeks ago, she was sleep talking my name. But now? She's still in a coma. I practically live here in the hospital. I haven't gone home for a month and we were going broke. Our savings were going pretty quick because of Demi's long term bills. Nick touches my shoulder and I look up.
"Hey.." I yawn out. "Thanks for bringing Dani."
"Not a problem, bro. We bought you some take out. Danika figured you were getting sick of the cafeteria food." He grinned a bit.
I mouthed him a 'thank you' and turned to my daughter.
"You did that for daddy, baby? Your so sweet."
She looked up and smiled at me again.
"Uncle Nicky helped me," She reached up and pecked me on my jaw. "Your welcome, daddy," She continued.
"Joe.."
There was a faint voice and I thought it was Dani. She sounded like Demi. So soothing. Its amazing how similar she's growing to be like her.
"Did you say something, Dani?"
"Danika.."
There it is again. Then, I hear Dani gasp.
"Daddy! Daddy! It's mommy!" She pointed.
No. Impossible. Could this really be it? I looked up to find an awake Demi. Weak.. but awake. My jaw slightly dropped as if I was starstruck. I get up on my feet, causing Danika to jump off me and I grab Demi's hand, bending over to stroke her hair. Her pale-ish lips curve upwards and it brings tears to my eyes.
"You're awake.. Demi.." I trail off and turn to Nick, "Nick, she's awake!" I turn again at Demi and I see Nick running out the door from the corner of my eye.
"How are you, hun?"
I hold her hand tighter and closer to my face as I talk against it.
"Good," I half sob and half chuckle. "Your awake.." I repeat again and the waterworks land on her hand. The corners of her lips tremble, trying to smile wider. For the first time in months, I felt alive again. The burn in my throat faded. The tightening of my chest subsided. I could breathe without choking. Danika hugs my leg, trying to get a better look and I slightly look down at her, not wanting to leave the sight of Demi being awake.
"Go, princess. Talk to mommy, " I sob.
She peeks around my leg and reaches for Demi. Her hand reaches her shoulder.
"Mommy?"
Demi looks at her.
"Dani? Oh, baby I missed you.."
I kissed her palm, my other hand stroking her beautiful face.
"Dems, we missed you too. We thought you'd never wake up." I began rambling.
"Joseph.. Babe.. I love you too."
That did it. God knows how much I longed to hear her say those words to me. Those three words. I purse my lips into a straight line as sobs were threatening to fall out. I let go of her hand and embraced her tightly. I shut my eyes, enjoying the feeling of her in my arms. Tears were still falling. Seconds later, she finally reacts and I feel her weak arms wrap around my neck as she rubbed the back of my hair.
"I love you," she says again.
She said it twice.
"You know, those word only work when they come from you.." I say into her ear. I hug tighter as I was about to say it back, "I lo-"
Her arm slides down my shoulder and I feel her body relax onto me. Oh God.. Please don't. I slightly pull away and see that her eyes are closed.
"Demi?" I say shaking her a bit. Nothing. "Dems?"
"What's going on," I hear the doctor get louder as he gets closer.
"No," I sob, my happy tears get drowned in my newly depressed tears. "Please.. Demi!"
"Alright, alright Mr. Jonas. Please let go of the patient." A nurse says.
"She was awake.."
Nick takes me a few feet away from Demi's bed and he tries to comfort me.
