Emerging Victorian based Australian designer, Robert Dumaresq, has been chosen by a panel of Australian design experts as this years most inspiring industrial design student talent; taking Gold
in the 2009 Australian Design Award-James Dyson Award with his Switch Commuter Bike.

A high performance folding bike, Switch was specifically designed for easy handling in crowded environments by folding to the footprint of just one wheel; developed to address the market need for a fully-functional bicycle that was also able to meet commuter needs by quickly and easily folding down for compact storage on transport, within the office, other work environments or at home.
The Australian Design Award-James Dyson Award was announced at Standards Australias Australian International Design Awards in Melbourne on Friday 29th May. The program recognises and promotes design excellence and innovation in Australia.

Robert's Switch Bike is now one of thirteen Australian designs that have made it through to the international James Dyson Award. For more information on the James Dyson Award, or to help your favourite Australian design project through to the next round, visit www.jamesdysonaward.org from 16 June to 12 July and you can rate the projects for an automatic Peoples Choice entry into the James Dyson Award shortlist.

  • Excellence of design reaches inspirational heights in the innovative way the front wheel was handled between 1:05 and 1:12!

  • Just don't try to ramp with it. lol

  • @Guessagainkk Its a commuter bike! why the hell should it be made from carbon? It should be cheap and reliable. Suspension isn't really necessary for road use and is just another aspect that adds weight and maintenance time.

  • Nice concept!

This folding method 'could' enable suspension (front and rear) and better styling than the "Swiss bike" and should be cheaper to manufacture, but not as compact as the "If mode" though.

BTW. Wheres the carbon fiber one? It would be nice to know how you resolve the rear brake and locking mechanism issue.

This should come in 2 model:

    - High end Carbon Urban (w/o suspension + single front fork, as demonstrated on other site)

    - Mid range MTB (double front fork + dual suspension)

  • How long do we have to wait til we can buy one??? The most stylish folding bike imaginable - it's brilliant!

  • I want one!
