The African painted puppies at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium splashed around in a kid-sized pool earlier today. The orphaned puppies mother loved the waterfall at the painted dog exhibit, so zookeepers brought this pool behind the scenes to let the pups play. They were a little skittish about being filmed, as you can see.

  • @scorpot African Painted Dog is just another name for the African Wild Dog, as is African Hunting Dog. Which name you use is up to you. Some writers prefer African Painted Dog as they believe calling it "Wild" carries a tacit value judgment. Also, the scientific name for the dog, Lycaon pictus, means "painted lycaon (wolf?)"

  • @tay8793 yeah, what icelore said. Less than 5000 left in the wild, maybe less than 3000. Practically hunted to extinction by early "conservationists" who thought they were a pest species (see Wikipedia article on "Lycaon pictus," the scientific name for the African wild/hunting/painted dog [you can see why they gave the article the name they did]) Also, the painted dog is an truly social animal: meaning it will go insane and/or get sick and die unless it lives in a pack of other painted dogs.

  • @SicSoulzGamin79 no they're not hyenas. The spotted or laughing hyena is a completely different animal. It's not even related to the dog or the wolf. Neither are the other types of hyena: striped hyena, brown hyena, and aardwolf. The African painted (aka hunting or wild) dog, however, is related to the wolf.

  • @bigeyeballz4 THANK YOU FOR INFORMATION

  • @scorpot The African wild dog, also called Cape hunting dog or painted dog, typically roams the open plains and sparse woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa
