  • We now have a clinic in Waianae Valley Oahu, if anyone would like to try one of our massages.

We are located at Kahumana retreat Centre and Organic Farm

  • Interestingly Hawaii was one of the first states to regulate massage and the reason they did this was to suppress native Hawaiian healers because very few of them could pass the exams about Latin names for muscles etc...

It was considered a heathen form of healing so they wanted to stamp it out....

  • for each other and use any technique form any culture that has the purpose of bring a person back into harmony with themselves, with nature and the community and God.

That's how I see Hawaiian healing culture is evolving but I respect the fact that you are an expert in the old ways and many of the old ways are great although some as I mentioned about aspects of the kapu system are not that great.

So for me personally i am looking more to the future, as well as drawing on the wisdom of the past.

  • I guess the way I see it here in the Waianae Coast which has the highest percentage of native born Hawaiian anywhere in the world is that Hawaiian culture is continually evolving too. In my feeling of how Hawaiian culture is evolving in the 21st century is that the essence of action is to come from the heart and in my feeling on this issue after a lot of prayer and in my experience communion with ancient spirits, present in this area and around my land, the most important things is to care

  • Hey Karen

we should do a swap sometime. Are you on Oahu? I come to the Big Island regularly every month too. We can exchange stories and check out each others healing systems. I have been looking forward to meeting with more Hawaiian healers

    Aloha Brandon

  • In regards to the terms soul and spirit I think these terms are used by different people in different ways and sometimes meaning the same thing, sometimes not. Sometimes Hawaiian terms don't translate entirely accurately into English but from my opinion Hawaiian culture is a deeply spiritual culture. That's how I would describe it in English. Not to say that I think everything about old Hawaiian culture is great. I don't agree with the Kapu system for instance.

  • Hi Brandon -

In my humble opinion, while your point is well made, you are taking too long to make it. Outline your talk with bullet points - get to the point, make the point, and move on. You can go back to the point again, if you wish to emphasize it - but your talk just seems a bit rambling and unfocused. It's hard for me to figure out exactly what you want to do - and you should state that in the first one or two minutes.

Strictly my 2 cents,- but U asked for feedback... Namaste....

  • Final- Integrative work is highly effective and efficient however the effectiveness can be increased by 'understanding' the cultural aspects. otherwise, the integrity is compromised and diluted. re: lomi - the core is ancestry and lineage, not spirit of aloha. much applause for noting lomi in your integration - few people do this! good stuff, brandon! i'm with you on your views of mini-med massage therapists!

  • Hi Karen

Thanks for the comments. To clarify I am not opposed to studying the body or anatomy. What I am opposed to is that one system of anatomy is pushed in one language being latin,. In regards to spending some time on the island I actually live in Makaha and have done so for 6 years and 2 years in Kailua before that. If anywhere in Hawaii has roots in Hawaiian culture I would say the Waianae coast does.

  • Part 3-“Spirit of Aloha”-spend some time on the islands to experience the roots! To achieve a mastery level of healing, aka Kahuna/Kumu, one ‘studied’ as an apprentice for nearly a lifetime. Many were chosen, but few were accepted. The spirituality of which you refer was part of life much different than we know today. Lots of Love, Kumu Karen Pualalea

  • Part 2-Chant, prayer, anatomy, physiology, psychology actually WERE studied in depth for one be Kahuna Lapa’au. Bishop Museum in Honolulu has records of such. ALL aspects of man, God and nature were studied. Facets of Hawaiian ‘massage’ include muscles, bones, therapeutic, prayer, some related to soul. Spirit was NOT part of the vocabulary ‘til ‘spirituality’ became a tagline during the New Age Movement of the 1800’s and a target market in the 1990’s.

  • Part 1-Applause for your efforts on your presentation, Brandon, however I’d like to address your generalizations and somewhat inaccurate statements about Hawaiian ‘massage.’

Having been involved in Hawaiian healing for over 15 years via apprenticeship, travel, education and client treatments I see Hawaiian Healing of all types greatly misrepresented, misunderstood and distorted. So, let me expound on a few topics which may be beneficial for your future use:

  • Hey Brandon....good presentation on the issues. Hope to see you sometime when you travel through Vancouver....

  • Thanks Brandon for being an articulate and fearless leader for health freedom in Canada. I feel honored to learn from you. Namaste.

  • This is exactly what I have been warning therapists about in the US. Thank you Brandon. It reaffirms my committment to the Massage Therapy Alliance of America. What gets me is it is such a small group of people doing this. I hope people are watching. This is exactly what I said would happen in Canada. I was told I was crazy. We don't need to organize to stop efforts like this? I am tired of waiting. Now is our moment.
