I work in highland park and felt inspired to share the devastation of this once beautiful city.

Serpent, while I agree the automobile/highway construction projects started white families to move to the suburbs, the 1967 race riots merely sped up the inevitable. People no longer felt safe in their communities so they left; leaving behind the violence, property damage (devils night), drugs, etc. and the all around negativeity of the area to raise their families in a safer environment. Blaming entire races for the downfall of a city is absurd.

The progressive dems took over Detroit in 1962. They passed a 6% City income tax (3% if you lived in Detroit, and 3% more if you worked in the city). All the productive people moved out to the suburbs where property taxes were low. The businesses followed. The race riots were merely a symptom of the underlying disease of OPPRESSIVE TAXATION and FISCAL IRRESPONSIBILITY. Detroit is a perfect example of the failure of the 'Great Society' movement of the sixties.

I purchased the house on the right at 5:02 during the past tax auction for 13 dollars.

The only thing Detroit's missing is an influx of rocket launchers to arrive and be sold to local criminals.

It is so sad to see neighborhoods like this. It's haunting to think once upon a time families lived there: new babies born, children playing in the streets, Sunday dinners at grandma's house, Christmas trees in the windows, and now... From hopeful beginnings, to a devastating end. It is truly heartbreaking.
