A high school student team from Felix Varela High School in Miami, Florida designed a microgravity experiment for the NASA DIME competition. This video clip shows the science experiment igniting a candle just before releasing into a free-fall drop in the NASA Glenn 2.2 Second Drop Tower.

The candle is seen first in the video with a 'hot wire' igniter adjacent to the candle wick.

The student team's experiment objective was to ignite a candle wick when the experiment was poised at the top of the tower just before being released to fall. Once the candle flame was established, the experiment was released to fall in the drop tower. The students wanted to study the reaction of the flame shape to microgravity.
