Periodically, prescribed burns are performed on St. Vincent NWR. Their purpose is to augment the role of natural fire in the ecosystem: stimulating the growth and reproduction of certain kinds of vegetation, and keeping shrubby ground growth to a minimum, thereby reducing fuel loads for catastrophic fires and allowing sunlight to filter in. This video features the GeekGal's visit to the pine-palmetto, interdune areas, just after a February prescribed burn; with the woods still smoldering, and the setting sun slanting through the thinned out thickets. With Spring around the corner, in a matter of weeks, the blackened ground will be sprouting and budding new life, once again. And just in case there is a rekindle, on this visit, she brings along her favorite firefighter, Mike V.. Happy Birthday, Mr. Mike! This one's for YOU!
