Getting through college without debt, with a family, so you can get to the mission field as fast as possible can be tricky. Living within your means on a missionary budget can be tricky too. Both require financial discipline. Hear how one couple is living frugally and making it work on one income.

Intentional discipline for getting to the mission field

We right now, work 20 hours a week, and go to school as well.

And so 1 half-time income supports our family of six and pays for school at the same time.

And a lot of people have wondered, How on earth do you do something like that? I mean, that sounds pretty insane, when you look at Yahoo! news or something, and it says that a kid is supposed to cost 10 billion dollars a year to feed and clothe and keep in their right mind or something.

When we first started this, we would do saving money months. And we would say, During this month, we're going to spend as little as possible. We even went to the point where we didn't buy food during that month. We didn't eat out, we only ate stuff we had in our cupboards (for the most part).

Yeah, and we still didn't empty our cupboards in a month.

Usually we didn't.

So that's depressing.

And then, we would say, If we manage to save a thousand dollars this month, we would buy something. I think one time it was, we would spend a night in a hotel. And we ended up spending a night in a 65-dollar hotel. So it didn't take up the whole thousand dollars.

The reality is, we don't do that stuff simply because it's necessary, or because you want to be thrifty or something for life.

This is a part of reaching the goal.

Paul said something in one of his books that he wrote, we flog ourselves, beat ourselves, daily, pressing toward the goal. He said that we discipline ourselves daily, to press on toward the goal that God set for us. And we don't do that because it's fun necessarily.

Although it's not that bad.

We do that because we want to hear a Well done, good and faithful servant, coming from the mouth of our God, when we finish this race.
