intensegamer99, one should not reject the reality, even it this reality is not what one expects to see. You could check all the dates in wiki at least /wiki/The_House_of_the_Rising_Sun and save yourself from demonstrating your ignorance.

When I was a high-school student of Japan, I listened to the song on a radio. I was moved by her singing but I always didn't understand detailed meaning of song. (I was a lazy student about English). After buying a disk I read lyrics card with dictionary. I had understood. Then the song moved me deeply more and more.

In my memory, this is her own song. For example, Animals’ version is entirely other music for me.

Why have I started listening to Joan Baez so late?

The oldest known existing recording House of the Rising Sun is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it for Vocalization Records in 1934. Joan Baez recorded it in 1960 on her eponymous debut album

It is a pre-Animals version. Check her discography, the song was included on her first album. Bob Dylan also had a pre-Animals version in 1962. Many other artists sang the song before the Animals.

This is a version of Josh White's 1941 recording. Not Guthrie's, not Lead Belly's

And a damned good one, too!

Of course it predates the Animals version and there are recordings of the song from the thirties that predate this one. The Animals took a great song about brothel slavery and made an appealing version that isn't really about anything.
