Listening closely near the end of that solo, you can clearly hear Smith coming in behind Thomas. I've got a few other Lunceford records (1937's "Annie Laurie" comes to mind) where Joe Thomas takes a higher register on his tenor solo, but I'd always took for granted that this was Willie. Good ear, johnny!
Dan Grissom sang in a lot of the Lunceford's ballads. Some think that he was so bad that they called him "Dan Gruesome." Personally, I don't think that he's that bad at all.
That's the 2nd time I've done that with these videos - first was when I incorrectly inserted a photo & credit to Ben Webster when it was actually Al Sears on tenor in Duke Ellington's "Swamp Fire".
Freddy's not even present here - in double checking the original label, trumpets are indeed Gerald Wilson, PAUL Webster & Snookie Young.
Thanks again, johnny. I'm far from perfect & this just taught me you can never be too careful. ;)
@johnnycchops God, you're right!

that first solo is actually Joe Thomas on tenor. Upper register, but a tenor. And in his own inimtable style...

Nah, Dan was best suited for these numbers, for sure.
And, IMO, he's nowhere near as unlistenable as Perry Coma. ;)
