Everybody walked out of the movie theatre when the classic Jupiter 1 saucer disc broke up in space and revealed the piece of crap new Jupiter 2.
-
@0:40 - "Roger Houston, and the monkey flips the switch." ... classic line.

@cnote4461 agreed. this and the hyper drive scene was all I really liked. Had some
of the sounds from the TV show but very few.

Major West is a whiney bitch. Just saying.

One of the most technically retarded scenes in any modern Sci Fi movie. A good thing the rest of the movie wasn't this bad, or it would have been an awful movie instead of a mediocre one.
-
Did they think the audience was going to think "WOW! What a spectacular ship!" when the Jupiter I broke away and revealed the Jupiter 2? It looks like a metal Crossandwich!
-
@ADEdge Indeed - it was ONE - of the best parts. Still - critics said the new ship design was a disappointment, the plot was a bomb, and they didn't have enough adventures as the original family did. When the saucer shell broke away - that thing looked like a giant flying prune or a flying turd with rockets. Noooo thanks man. lol

@cnote4461 As if! That was one of the most impressive parts of the entire movie, when the whole thing burst open to release the Jupiter 2. Sad you let such a small detail ruin a fantastic movie though...

@nozcr - They made this superfluous " shield / shell " just so it would look like the original Jupiter II. Nostalgia indeed. The tower seems to have been inspired by " Contact ", maybe.
One of the few things that the movie had in common with the series was Dr. Smith. In the pilot, he was a stone - cold - blooded killer ( Unusual for a family friendly kid show ) who supposedly snapped a guy's neck before sneaking aboard the Jupiter II.
-
They played this for nostalgia. There's no need for the ship to have a protective shield for liftoff if it was designed to routinely land and take off from other planets. I still don't understand why they felt they had to launch the thing from the top of a skyscraper. They could have launched it from an airport runway.
What we need is an exact remake of the 1960s series into a feature length movie using todays modern film making technology . And the same goes for War of the worlds.
