Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (WI-02) lauds President Obama's signing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law on October 28, 2009.

The new law strengthens our response to hate crimes by adding protections for people targeted for violence because of their gender, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. The legislation adds these characteristics to existing hate crimes laws because of a history and pervasive pattern of heinous violent crimes committed against individuals because of these characteristics.

  • How will we change the definition of hate crimes as the political landscape changes. People are assaulted and murdered for numerous reasons every day. This could just open up another loose reason to convict someone.

You are not a part of the mainstream populace, which makes you less effective as a representative.

  • well hate crimes are bad and should not happen, but this law is horrible. they pretty much limit your right to free speech.
