The Proton is a larger somewhat more sophisicated version of the Vostok but the basic design is the same. It first flew in 1968 and after all this time still reliable

They sent up the first man made satellite, first human in space, first spacewalk, first mission to the moon....
Also, they have a launch vehicle that has operated reliably and far less expensively than anything we have done. They built an engine that is still in use that produces more thrust, weighs less, costs less, and is more reliable than what we have.
They may have not sent the first man to the moon, but claiming the moon is all that matters is so ignorant its stunning.

Science is science. I don't care which country builds which rockets. Humanity is trying to understand where it came from and the nature of this mysterious universe it exists in. There are better things than nationalism. Go World! Go Science! And may We all work together to learn everything We can.

@effingA1989 lol, ok, but i know for a fact that the early russian rocket programs were reckless in the space race, a rocket landed on a villiage killling hundrens of military personell. I dont think you would see that in america...

What astounds me is the fact that the rocket is essentially the same as the one used to launch Gagarin. It's about as reliable as it's going to get with regard to a space booster and if it's not broken, don't fix it.

@effingA1989: Trying to lessen the achievements of the American Space Program to inflate the successes of Russia's is no less stupid than the other way around. It's very frustrating how every other video of a space launch by either country turns into a shouting match over whose rockets are better.
