In his first grade ESL classroom, Linguist and author, Antonio Graceffo, utilizes a fun version of Show and Tell to elicit real, communicative English. Before starting the game, Antonio filled the bag with a collection of random objects. Each student must come to the front of the room, choose an object and then talk about it. This is a free speaking exercise since the students have no way of knowing what objects they might encounter.
This video also contains a sample phonics lesson. Phonics is extremely important for Chinese children, because their native tongue is not written phonetically. So, in addition to learning how to cope with and negotiate the English alphabet, they must also learn conceptually how an alphabet works.
In Grade One, Antonio expects the students to say a few sentences and answer one or two questions about the objects. The exercise could also be used for higher level or adult students, where the teacher might set a minimum time limit, such as one minute, and require the students to speak until time runs out.

Good stuff, thanks man. I start my new job in a few weeks. It's a kindergarten in China. Apart from a TESOL course, I've never taught in my life. Nervous!
Great video!
