Free beer? Yes!

Hey I thought I would be bored. Oh just another brewery tour right? Well ...yes and no.. it was fun and something to do on a Sunday with friends. As usual the mundane is more fun in Japan with the extra quality and hospitality added. I also found a great Udon place in Bubaigawara as well so watch and enjoy!

Keio, JR Nanbu Line Bubaigawara Station - 5 minutes by Bus (Free). Three beers per visitor... (FREE!)

Or the final stop on the Musashino line outbound from Tokyo (Fuchuhommachi) then a short stroll follow the signs

1 hour tour showing each stage of the process.

History

Suntory was started by Torii Shinjiro, who first opened his store Torii Shoten in Osaka on February 1, 1899, to sell imported wines. In 1907, the store began selling a sweet tasting red wine called Akadama Port Wine. The store became Kotobukiya company in 1921 to further expand its business. In December 1924, Yamazaki Distillery, the first Japanese whisky distillery, began its production of malt whisky. Five years later Suntory Whisky Sirofuda (White Label), the first single malt whisky made in Japan, was sold.

Due to wartime shortage of World War II, Kotobukiya was briefly forced to halt its development of new products. In 1961, Kotobukiya launched the famous "Drink Tory's (Whisky) and Go to Hawaii" campaign. At the time, a trip abroad was considered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In 1963, Kotobukiya changed its name to "Suntory", taken from the name of the famous whisky it produces. In the same year, Musashino Beer Factory began its production of the Suntory Beer. In 1997, the company became Japan's sole bottler, distributor, and licensee of Pepsi products.

Kisaburo udon shop is located about ten minutes from Bubaigarwara station and there is signage at the station to guide you there. Its well known locally so just ask!

  • i took one look at that beer hauler and wanted to kneel down and praise it...only in japan would you find something so amazing that makes delivering beer so much easier and faster

  • Actually I saw one in the movie Hanable .....bowels in or out? part. Yea defiantly easy on the back if your job is hauling boxes of beer or cans all day.

  • To bad we can not get the "real" Japanese beer in the US. Kiren is brewed by Bud... and Asahi and Sapporo are brewed in Canada. They say it is brewed under strict supervision, but there is a big taste difference. I had some Sapporo from Japan and some from Canada. I told my friend if she could tell me which is from Japan I will treat her to Sushi.... she picked it out with no problem and had Sushi on me. I heard Pabst was brewing Suntory for sale in the US, have not run across it yet.

  • Yea! I was very disappointed with the taste of any Japanese beer brewed by US companies or the like. More so after tasting the real thing. I could find the big silver cans about 32oz from Asahi in certain stores in Boston. They were imported from Tokyo and were great. Cost 3 to 4 dollars a can though.... and worth it!

  • The only beer imported from Japan here is Orion from Okinawa, and it is $3 a bottle, and it is a pretty good brew. Hope I can make it there around the 12th of Oct since I had to delay my normal Sept trip. Beer and yakitori are calling my name.

  • Torikukai went back to charcoal you must come out for a bite... he is busy as ever and just added more seats

  • Todd, you need to add a new video of Torikukai. I am planning a trip from 14 Oct to 4 Nov or so... hope to enjoy some Izakaya with you then.

  • Charcoal is a must for grilling yakitori. Looking forward to going there with you when I get back. Have you been to the place in Shinjuku where we went with Chihiro and your wife? What about the place I told you about near Shinjuku station? From 3PM to 7PM beer is only 300yen and the food it really good.
